How it all started
Can you believe it’s been a whole decade since we launched the NHS Scotland careers website? On 31 March 2026, we’re celebrating 10 years of helping people discover work they love. I’ve been part of this since day one, and it’s been a massive team effort to get here.
Back at the start, the Scottish Government asked NHS Education for Scotland (NES) to build a careers website. I remember the buzz of the early days, working with designers and tech experts to get everything ready. It was a huge challenge, but we'd all shared the same goal of helping you.
Even though I’d worked in the NHS before, I quickly realised I'd lots to learn about our different roles. I set up a group of experts from across the service to guide me. Their knowledge helped me write the helpful, honest content you see on the site today.
Working behind the scenes: a team effort
Today, my NES Technology Services colleagues keep the website running smoothly. They’re always helping me create new, accessible features so the website works for everyone. I also work closely with the marketing team, who manage our Instagram and LinkedIn accounts.
I want you to discover exactly how this website can help with your career planning. Whether you're picking school subjects, looking for your first job, or moving from a different industry, I've got you covered. I also create content to support parents and teachers in guiding the next generation.
I've designed the site to be the best place to see how you can build a career with real purpose. We’ve got over 350 different roles you can choose from. You could analyse data, help a patient recover, or run the essential tech that keeps our services going right across Scotland.
Earn while you learn
We've got lots of ways you can join us. For many roles, your life experience and transferable skills are just as important as formal qualifications.
I've made sure the website highlights roles where you can earn a wage, learn on the job and gain qualifications as you go. For example, you could apply for a fully funded Modern Apprenticeship or a Graduate Apprenticeship with us.

Tech for good and a greener NHS Scotland
When you think of tech and green jobs, the NHS might not be your first thought. But we've got so many roles where you can build skills for a digitally enabled, greener health service. If you're into tech, you could use your skills for good by building apps that sync with wearable tech to monitor a person’s health or using AI to spot diseases.
We're committed to reaching net zero by 2040 to help tackle climate change. That's why the website highlights how our green jobs make a real difference to the environment. I’m starting to add green jobs where you can support a circular economy by helping us reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Putting you first
We want you to bring your whole self to work every single day. You'll always find a safe and welcoming space to be exactly who you are. I love highlighting our supportive staff networks that give everyone a voice.

We hire people who share our core values and care about the same things we do. I make sure the website shows how your mental and physical health always come first. You’ll have access to expert occupational health services and plenty of ways to boost your wellbeing.
It's completely normal for your life to change throughout your career. We want you to feel confident asking for help whenever you need it.
Perks that matter
I love getting to write about perks that matter, like hybrid working, flexible locations, and generous parental leave. We’re here to help you balance your job with any caring responsibilities.
As well as a real living wage to help you stay financially secure, you’ll get a generous employer contribution towards your pension. This helps protect your lifestyle when you decide to retire.
Growing to meet your needs
I rely on your feedback to make sure the website helps you make informed career decisions. I've run workshops and interviews with people just like you, so I can produce new content and improve our pages.
The website is now a vital tool for connecting people with the right roles. I’m so proud that my work helps attract over 316,000 users every year.
Ameet Bellad, Principal Lead, shared, “The website has become a vital tool for connecting people with the right roles. It plays a massive part in helping us build a workforce that meets the needs of Scotland's communities. By making our career pathways clearer, we're opening doors for people who might never have thought about a career in health and care.”
Looking ahead
We're always looking to the future. Sybil Canavan, Director of People and Culture, is excited about what comes next. She said, “It's so important to have a space that speaks directly to the next generation of our workforce. The website makes it easy for people to see themselves building a fulfilling career with us, and we're committed to creating a forward-thinking NHS Scotland where anyone can find a role they're passionate about.”
Over the next year, I’m planning even more improvements to keep up with new tech. I’ll be refreshing content layouts to make finding career information seamless. I want to reduce digital friction, so you get what you need fast.
I also want to bring our best content straight to your social feeds. That’s why I’m helping make more short-form videos that show exactly what a day on the job looks like. These videos give you everything you need to confidently plan your next steps and find a role you love.
