NHS Scotland is looking for innovative and highly experienced individuals to take up NHS Board chair roles across Scotland. We have several opportunities coming up in 2025/26.

Help shape the future of health and care in Scotland

Are you people-focused, strong on governance, and visionary about how health and care can transform to meet the demands of the future? We want you to apply to become an NHS board chair in Scotland.

As an NHS Board chair, you’ll play a pivotal role in guiding your board through a period of transformation and renewal. The role demands strong leadership, strategic insight, and a clear commitment to improving outcomes for people and communities across Scotland.

Current priorities reflect the scale and urgency of the challenges that NHS boards face, as well as the ambition of their response. Chairs are expected to champion and oversee delivery based on the following strategic policy documents:

  • Operational Improvement Plansby driving efficiency, quality, and performance to ensure sustainable services that meet current and future demand.
  • Service Renewal Frameworkby embedding learning from the pandemic to reform care pathways and strengthen resilience across health and social care.
  • Population Health Frameworkby tackling the root causes of poor health and reducing inequalities through a whole system, preventative approach.
  • Public Sector Reformby contributing to cross-sector change through effective governance, collaboration, and innovation.

Ready to take on an NHS Board chair role?

Several NHS Board chair posts will be advertised in 2025/26. If you're ready to take on one of these roles, now is a great time to start planning. Vacancies will be available across local and national NHS Boards of different sizes, leading on different issues. 

We want to hear from you if you are: 

  • An experienced non-executive or chair within a public body. 
  • Have experience in chairing governance committees.
