Why I swapped my old job for a maternity support worker career

I’m Hannah, a healthcare support worker in Aberdeen. Being part of a birth is a huge privilege that motivates me to provide attentive, kind, and compassionate care every day.
Why I swapped my old job for a maternity support worker career

Finding a role that matters

At school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for a job. I felt indecisive for a long time and tried a few roles before I realised how much I loved working in healthcare. I spent a few years as a community carer for elderly and vulnerable adults.

This experience was a great help when I applied to join the NHS. I started on the staff bank after my first child was 12 months old. Having my own kids made me realise how much attentive care helps new parents at the start of their journey.

I decided to take a jump and applied for a permanent role in the midwives unit. I haven’t looked back since because my work feels meaningful every day. I work alongside a registered midwife and help them with whatever they need to keep patients safe, comfortable, and supported.

Hands-on care in the maternity unit

My role is busy, and no 2 days are ever the same. I might set up the delivery room for a labouring woman or help a new mum with feeding. As a maternity support worker, I also use clinical skills like taking bloods and recording observations.

Some people think we just clean rooms and offer drinks. While those things are important, my job is mostly about providing direct care to women and families. I love using my skills to help things run smoothly for the whole team.

I always look to develop my skills through training and workshops. At the moment, I’m preparing to take a cannulation workshop to help on the ward during busy times. This will allow me to provide even more support to the midwives I work with.

Why the delivery room is special

The best part of my day is definitely being in the delivery room. Being part of someone's birth is something I will never get bored of. It gives me the motivation to get into work and do my best every morning.

I believe having integrity is vital because it defines the care you provide. Knowing I’ve done my best for families and my colleagues makes me feel satisfied. Even on challenging days, I know I’m making a positive difference with genuine kindness.

In the future, I want to start my midwifery degree at Robert Gordon University. My time as a healthcare support worker has prepared me for all aspects of the role. I look forward to continuing my midwifery pathway and helping more families thrive.
