GP training and careers in Scotland are supported by NHS Education for Scotland (NES). We welcome International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and value the diverse experience you bring to our healthcare system. This guide explains the essential requirements, main career pathways, and support available to help you settle into your new life here.
Before you can practise as a GP in Scotland, there are 2 key requirements you must meet, regardless of your background.
The route you take depends on your current level of experience. Broadly, there are 2 directions:
If you have not yet completed GP specialty training, you will follow a route that leads to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). There are 4 ways to achieve this:
If you have already completed a GP training programme outside the UK, you may be eligible for direct entry to the GP Register through one of these recognition pathways.
