Broad-based Training (BBT) in Scotland is managed by NES. It is a unique 2-year programme you can apply for after successfully completing Foundation Training.
BBT is a good option if you're uncertain which medical specialty you'd like to continue training in.
It allows you to gain high-quality experience in 4 core specialties before committing to a specific career path. You will spend 6 months in each of the following areas:
After you complete the programme, you can choose to continue training in any of these 4 areas of medicine. If you choose General Practice, you can apply to enter GP specialty training directly at the ST2 level.
Before applying for BBT, you should reflect on your career goals. BBT is a good option if you want to get experience in different medical specialties but see yourself as a future GP.
Talk to your supervisors and mentors about your career goals and interests during your Foundation Training. They can offer advice and support as you prepare your application.
The main value of BBT is the high-quality experience you’ll gain across 4 different medical specialties. It gives you a well-rounded skillset that’s ideal for a future in General Practice.

The application for BBT is part of the national recruitment process for medical specialties. You’ll use Oriel, the national online recruitment system, to apply. The key steps include:
