Broad-based Training for GPs

Broad-based training (BBT) is a 2-year programme you can apply for after successfully completing foundation training.

What is Broad-based Training?

BBT is a good option if you want to gain experience in different medical specialties but see yourself as a future GP.

You’ll gain experience in the following 4 core specialties before committing to a specific one:

  • General Practice
  • Internal Medicine
  • Paediatrics
  • Psychiatry

After you complete the BBT programme, you can apply to enter GP specialty training at the ST2 level.

Is Broad-based Training right for you?

Before applying for BBT, you should reflect on your career goals. BBT is a good option if you want to get experience in different medical specialties but see yourself as a future GP.

Talk to your supervisors and mentors about your career goals and interests during your Foundation Training. They can offer advice and support as you prepare your application.

How to apply for BBT

The application for BBT is part of the national recruitment process for medical specialties. You’ll use Oriel, the national online recruitment system, to apply. The key steps include:

  • completing an online application form
  • sitting the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA)
  • an interview

Your performance in these areas will determine your ranking and eligibility for a BBT post. Check the national recruitment website for specific dates and deadlines.

Training in each specialty

The main value of BBT is the high-quality experience you’ll gain across 4 different medical specialties. It gives you a well-rounded skillset that’s ideal for a future in General Practice.

  • General Practice—You’ll gain hands-on experience in a community setting. Here, you’ll learn to manage a wide variety of medical conditions and develop strong patient relationships. This is also where you’ll learn to apply a holistic approach to care.
  • Internal Medicine—This rotation helps you build confidence in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions in a hospital environment. This experience is helpful for a GP, who often sees the first signs of these illnesses.
  • Paediatrics—Your training in paediatrics will focus on the unique health needs of children and young people. You'll learn how to communicate with young patients and their parents, as well as how to manage common childhood illnesses.
  • Psychiatry—You’ll develop your mental health skills during this rotation. You'll learn to diagnose and support patients with a range of mental health conditions, strengthening your communication and empathy skills. This is a vital area for any future GP.

Joining GP Specialty Training after BBT

Successfully completing the BBT programme allows you to fast-track your career in General Practice. The certificate of completion is your pathway to entering GP specialty training (GPST) directly at the ST2 level, skipping the first year of the traditional programme.
