A guide to Practice-based Small Group Learning

This guide explains Practice-based Small Group Learning (PBSGL). It covers how the programme works, its benefits, and how you can join a group. It’s for any GP in Scotland looking for a supportive and practical way to manage their CPD.

What is PBSGL?

Practice-based Small Group Learning is a unique way to complete your CPD. It brings together small groups of GPs to discuss real-life clinical cases. The programme is managed by NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

Instead of attending lectures, your group works through specially prepared learning modules. These modules are based on common problems seen in General Practice. The focus is on practical learning that you can apply directly to your work.

How does PBSGL work in practice?

The PBSGL process is simple and structured. It is designed to fit easily into a busy working life.

The learning cycle involves 3 main steps:

  1. Preparation—Before a meeting, you’ll read the module and reflect on your own knowledge and experience.
  2. Group meeting—Your group meets for about 2 hours to discuss the cases in the module and share knowledge. A trained facilitator helps to guide the discussion.
  3. Reflection—After the meeting, you’ll reflect on what you learned and record it as CPD for your appraisal.

This process helps you to identify and fill gaps in your knowledge.

The benefits of joining a PBSGL group

PBSGL is an increasingly popular form of CPD for many GPs in Scotland. It offers a supportive and engaging way to learn.

Relevant, real-life learning

The learning modules are based on everyday General Practice. This helps you to connect your learning directly to the patients you see. It is a very practical and effective way to update your knowledge.

Evidence-based practice

The programme helps you use evidence and quality standards to improve patient care. This matters because studies show that this style of peer learning improves results for patients.

Peer support and reduced isolation

General Practice can sometimes feel isolating. PBSGL provides a safe space to meet with your peers. You can share experiences and challenges with others who understand your work.

Counts towards your CPD

Each completed module counts as CPD credits for your annual appraisal. The programme provides a structured way to meet your learning requirements. You can easily record your reflections on the SOAR platform.

How to join a PBSGL group

Joining a group is a straightforward process managed by NES.

To get started, you should:

  • Visit the CPD Connect website—In the PBSGL section, you’ll learn more about the programme and see if there are existing groups in your area. Discover more about PBSGL.
  • Register your interest—You can register online to join an existing group or even to start a new one.
  • Get matched with a group—The NES team will help find a suitable local group for you to join.

Many groups are now a mix of online and in-person meetings. This offers greater flexibility for GPs across Scotland.
