Rediscover the Joy of General Practice

This page provides an overview of the Rediscover the Joy of General Practice programme. It is for experienced GPs seeking a new challenge or a more flexible way to work. The programme is co-ordinated by the Scottish Rural Medicine Collaborative (SRMC).

What is the 'Joy' programme?

This programme offers a unique opportunity for experienced GPs. You can work in different, often rural, practices across Scotland on a flexible, short-term basis.

It is designed to bring your valuable skills to practices that need support. At the same time, it offers you a refreshing change of environment. This can help you rediscover the parts of the job you enjoy the most.

How the programme works

The programme is designed to be as flexible as possible. You are in control of how and where you work.

Key features of the programme include:

  • Flexible placements—You can choose to work for 1 to 4 weeks at a time in one or more practices.
  • Financial support—Your salary is paid pro-rata, and your accommodation and travel costs are covered.
  • A supportive network—You will be connected to a community of other GPs on the programme through regular meetings and a dedicated WhatsApp group.

This structure allows you to contribute your expertise without the commitment of a permanent role.

The benefits of joining the programme

The programme offers a rewarding experience for established GPs. It is a great way to use your skills in a new and different way.

Gain a fresh perspective

Working in a different practice, even for a short time, can be re-energising. It can give you a fresh perspective on your own work. It is a great way to share your skills and learn from other teams.

Work with flexibility and control

You can choose how many weeks you work each year. This makes the programme a great option for portfolio GPs, or those who are semi-retired. It is also suitable for GPs working abroad who want to maintain their UK licence.

Try before you commit

If you are thinking of moving to a rural area, this is a perfect opportunity. You can experience work and life in different parts of Scotland before making a long-term commitment.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is open to all experienced GPs. It is particularly suitable if you are:

  • a portfolio GP looking to add variety to your work
  • a GP nearing retirement who wants to keep working flexibly
  • an established GP who would benefit from a new challenge
  • a doctor considering a permanent move to a rural area
