As a pharmacy technician you'll provide an important role within the pharmacy and wider healthcare teams. This may involve reviewing and recording patients’ medicines, dispensing, and accurately checking medicines on prescription. You'll also provide advice to patients on how to take and store their medicines safely.

What qualifications do I need to become a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician?

To apply for the Technical Apprenticeship in Pharmacy Services, you should have the following National 5 qualifications:

  • Chemistry

  • English

What skills do I need to become a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician?

As a pre-registration pharmacy technician, you'll need these skills:

Full training will be provided

You will be employed by a Health Board as a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician and undertake the Technical Apprenticeship in Pharmacy Services at SCQF Level 8. Over a minimum two-year period, you will gain experience working across hospital, primary care, and community pharmacy settings.

Once you've completed the apprenticeship, you'll be eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a pharmacy technician. You will be required to undergo revalidation each year to maintain your registration and show how you regularly reflect on your learning and practise.
