Prince's Trust Get into Healthcare
Are you looking to develop essential skills and gain valuable work experience in healthcare? If you’re aged between 16-30, apply for the Prince’s Trust Get into Healthcare programme.
Before you start the programme
The programme is free and can run from 2 days to 6 weeks. You should also know that:
- it won’t affect your Jobseeker’s Allowance
- your travel costs will be paid
- your lunch and childcare costs may be covered
Get into Healthcare programme
NHSScotland partners with Prince’s Trust to deliver on-the-job training for the Get into Healthcare programme. If you decide to do your work experience with us, you’ll receive support from both Prince’s Trust course leaders and your NHS mentor.
What you will do
Your work placement in the NHS will help you to:
- meet new people
- build confidence
- develop communication skills
- learn interview techniques
- find out what it takes to begin your career journey
Employability skills
At the end of the programme, you’ll be guaranteed an interview for vacancies relevant to your placement. Your NHS mentor will give you an overview of the NHSScotland application process and help you prepare for your interview.
Mentor support
Once you have completed the programme, a Prince’s Trust staff member or mentor will continue to support you for up to six months and assist in planning your future.

'Get Into' success story
Rachel had a great Get into Healthcare experience. After her 6-week placement, she got a job as a healthcare support worker.
In her new role, Rachel won the National Delta Air Lines Rising Star Award winner 2019. This award recognises young people who have overcome obstacles in their life and are now in sustainable employment.
Rachel now plans to do a degree in Mental Health Nursing.

COVID-19 support
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prince’s Trust in Scotland is supporting young people in one-to-one sessions online with a dedicated staff member. They are also providing access to group sessions that cover a series of topics, including:
- personal and social development
- employability
- enterprise: starting a business
The Prince’s Trust has recently introduced employability sessions on social care, including online recruitment events. They hope to be back running face-to-face Get into Healthcare programmes soon.
