If you’re between 16-24 and looking for information and experience to help you into employment or further education, check out Barnardo’s Works.
They deliver quality employability programmes and Employment Training and Skills (ETS) services.
The Barnardo’s team works with you and employers to match your goals with local employment opportunities. They’ll provide you with skills and qualifications that you’ll use throughout your career.
In partnership with NHSScotland, Barnardo’s Works offer young people valuable experience in the NHS. Together, we’ve helped young people progress into permanent roles in:
- domestic services
- support services
When you become a potential candidate, mentors from the NHSScotland Board hosting the placement will meet with you. Before you start the programme, you’ll need to complete:
- an occupational health and safety advisory service (OHSAS) health check
- a PVG or disclosure check
On the programme
During your programme journey, you’ll be supported by Barnardo’s Works Project Workers. NHSScotland will also be supported by a Barnardo’s Works Employer Liaison Officer. They will make sure we have the skills and knowledge to support you in the workplace. This includes guidance on:
- equality and diversity
- disability awareness
- workplace health and safety
The main programme you may be involved in is the Employability Fund. This programme runs at Stage 2 and Stage 3.
At Stage 2 of the programme, you’ll complete SCQF Level 3 Steps to work. At Stage 3, you’ll complete SCQF Level 4 Certificate of Work Readiness.
These qualifications are Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) accredited. This means they will be accepted by employers and further education institutions.
There will be regular reviews between you, your NHS mentor and Barnardo’s staff. These reviews will allow you to develop strategies to further your employability skills and performance.
You’ll be offered a guaranteed interview upon successful completion of the work placement.
Craig completed Barnardo’s Works employability Fund 3 programme in 2019.
NHS Highland kindly offered Craig an 8-week work placement with the Domestic Services Department. He received a full induction and lots of training. Craig made a fantastic impression on his colleagues. Towards the end of his placement, he was offered a full-time position in the department.
Craig continues to thrive in his new role, successfully sustaining employment with one of the largest employers in Inverness.
