Decontamination supervisors manage teams that decontaminate reusable medical devices to ensure they are returned to the users in a sterile condition for reuse on patients. These devices help other healthcare professionals carry out operations, procedures or examinations. They could come from:

Starting your career
To become a decontamination supervisor, you need a good standard of education. There are no entry requirements, but useful subjects include:
A technical certificate in decontamination or an HNC from an administrative role could also be useful when applying for this role.
Work placements and volunteering
You may find it helpful to get some experience of working in healthcare by doing a work placement. There may also be opportunities to volunteer. This could help you when applying to university, college or a new job with NHSScotland.
You’ll begin a training programme once you start work as a decontamination supervisor. The programme lasts 18 months. During training, you’ll be mentored and supported by colleagues and a management team.
The training will make you multi skilled, meaning you can handle medical devices for all specialities in every work area of the unit.
As part of the decontamination unit, you’ll be working in 3 different areas. These areas are separated into rooms, known as the:
- steriliser room
The washroom is where devices are first received. They’re checked in this room and prepared for cleaning and disinfection in an automated washer disinfector machine.
The cleanroom is the area for inspecting, function testing, assembling and packaging medical devices.
Finally, once a device has passed all the earlier stages and checks, it will be moved to the steriliser room. Here, the packaged device will be sterilised before being sent away for use.
What you’ll do
As a decontamination supervisor, you’ll work with a variety of medical devices, carefully following guidelines and procedures to make sure they’re properly decontaminated.

You’ll use a range of automated equipment to carry out these tasks.
Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll also be expected to manage and train other members of the team, including decontamination technicians.
You’ll need these skills:

- time management
You should also have great IT skills and be able to use Microsoft packages.
Who you’ll work with
You’ll manage decontamination technicians and work alongside senior supervisors in the decontamination unit.
You’ll work a rotating shift rota. You could be working in the washroom, cleanroom or steriliser room during your shift.
