There are lots of different Modern Apprenticeships where you can start your career in the NHS. We've put together some facts and figures about the programme to help you decide if a Modern Apprenticeship is right for you.

What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeships provide you with the chance to secure industry-recognised qualifications at a range of SCQF levels, whilst in employment.

In NHSScotland, a variety of Modern Apprenticeship programmes are available, including:

How many Modern Apprentices are there?

On 31 December 2021, there were 38,274 Modern Apprentices recorded in training across the UK. Of them, 69.2% were aged between 16 and 24.

In Scotland, there were 6,009 Modern Apprentices recorded in training by the end of September 2021.

What are the opportunities for a Modern Apprentice in NHSScotland?

Healthcare is the second-largest employment sector in the country. There are currently 180,653 people employed by NHSScotland.

What does the future hold for Modern Apprentices in Scotland?

The healthcare workforce is expected to grow by 2.5% between 2021 and 2024. That's an increase of 6,700 people.

In fact, healthcare is forecast to account for 7.7% of all job opportunities in Scotland between 2021 and 2024.
