Changing career?

Are you looking for a new challenge? Are you thinking about a complete change of career? Would you like to retrain for a healthcare profession?

NHSScotland has a huge variety of full and part-time working or volunteering roles available and various entry routes open to you.  We recruit people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience and offer an excellent benefits package for all employees.

Qualifications

If you left school with no formal qualifications but have been working for many years, the skills and experience you have gained in your working life are likely to be transferable to a new job in NHSScotland. Whatever you've been doing, you can help to make a difference to patients' lives.

For many clinical healthcare support worker roles, you may not need academic qualifications. Instead, we look for motivation, enthusiasm and a dedication to caring and you can progress your career by learning while you work. Many candidates for nursing and midwifery courses left school some years ago or are coming to nursing or midwifery through existing healthcare experience. Some have no formal qualifications but are still able to join an access course which will lead them to higher education.

Alternatively, you may be keen to undertake a degree, diploma or other formal training to start your new career. This could lead you to a job working in estates and facilities or as a physiotherapist, a paramedic or a dental therapist. There is no age limit when it comes to starting your training and any experience you can bring will be an asset. You might also get some financial support while training.

What is the SCQF?

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) is the national qualifications framework for Scotland. The Framework can help you plan your learning and develop progression routes to follow, whatever your situation may be. The Framework is for all learners, whether you are

  • At school
  • At college or university
  • An adult returning to education
  • Considering getting into learning
  • Wanting to re-skill or change career, perhaps after being made redundant
  • A student from outside Scotland

If you are not sure what course or training is right for you then you can use the Framework to help you understand your options. Further help on careers and learning is also available at www.myworldofwork.co.uk

Work experience

Getting some work experience or voluntary work in your area of interest can help you decide if this is the career you want to follow and this experience will demonstrate your commitment to a career in healthcare.
